There’s nothing wrong in fighting back. There’s something wrong that’s why we fight back.

The rights that we are enjoying right now are because of the mass movements spearheaded by our national heroes. To those who fight for the oppressed and the marginalized, thank you for your service. Happy national heroes day!

THE WOMAN BEHIND HER ADVOCACIES: A TRIBUTE

“Founder of Bantay Bata”, “Advocate of Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig”, a woman of great humanitarian works who had chosen service for the poor and to face the realities of life than just being there experiencing the life in a bubble of privilege she was supposed to have.

Regina Paz “Gina” La’o López, according to people who had known her, was an epitome of the fight for the environment and for the special importance of children on the society. She had spent the earlier parts of her life serving in Africa that taught her how to dislike wasting and to serve people with all that she can. Moving to the Philippines, she was described by her sister as someone who can be liken to a person from a different era as she is used to do all the things by herself without any aid from others.

“I envision a countrywithout poverty. Our people would have enough food to put on the table, enough money to send their kids to school. We can make it happen, and I feel that the way to do it is by creating models on the ground to show that it can be done.”

Lopez said as a former DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) secretary recognized her for her notable contributions for the betterment of the society. An ally for the environment and a woman who aims for the welfare of the people.

Love for children. While watching a television show her passion for serving children who had been treated badly and had been oppressed was fueled which thrived her to create the Bantay Bata with easy numbers to access such as 163. She had also founded Siniskwela, Math Tinik and etc. that will help with the education of the kids.

Most of all, her contribution for the Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig had been very remarkable. Coming from a woman as passionate as she is and how happy she was with the service she had rendered seems unfathomable for a sickness to bloom. Indeed, behind her happy face and willingness to serve, she was diagnosed with cancer which eventually ended her journey in life. But that does not mean that her legacy and good works will not be remembered and continued.

As a remarkable person while she’s still alive, her passing also made an impact not just for the environmentalists but also for the Filipinos living in marginalized communities whose lives changed with the help of organizations spearheaded by her.

“I had cancer and it did not bother me at all because as far as I saw, it was a piece of paper…You just keep positive because cancer works on fear. Don’t worry about it and anything can be fixed.”

DEATH PENALTY IS NOT A NECESSITY

Death Penalty in the Philippines has sparked issues in our country for a long time since the time of the Spaniards and it is described as a government-sanctioned practice in which a person is executed as a punishment for a committed crime.

It was already abolished in the early 2000s but today, our senators are having a hard time debating whether to bring this practice back to life or just leave it as it is, a dark part of our history.

Why do we need death penalty? Is it really necessary to take the lives of individuals who still have the potential to change?

Humans are ethical beings and we have the capacity to speak, think and express emotions. People who did terrible things can still change as the time passes by and there are lots of examples of criminals who changed out there.

Which is why there is no need for death penalty.

Maximum security prisoners at Baberton prison which are consisted of rapists, murderers and other criminals have shown that they can turn over a new leaf by handing over their first harvest to four Umjindi non-governmental organizations in order to fight against poverty.

According to Pushkar Banakar of Express News Service from India, death row prisoners turn over a new leaf which was proven by convicts named, Datta and Harkishan, who were convicted for rape and murder. After many years on death row, they gained new perspectives in life and hoped to be remembered by their families for the good deeds that they have done.

Our country does not need death penalty because if people from other countries on death row can change maybe our people can change too.

What we actually need in this country of ours is not an increase of cemeteries filled by people killed by death penalty but an increase of rehabilitation programs in jails and more jobs and programs that does not only benefit the convicted criminals and their families financially but can also support the inmates’ efforts to change and to repent for their mistakes.
